VIDEO:  Student Activists for a Living Wage

Over the past several years, students at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN have been pressuring the University to pay their lowest-earning employees a fair wage. I sat down with four of them to find out what a "living wage" is and to learn about what they're doing to bring attention to the issue.

I hate to break it to you guys, Minimum wage was never supposed to be a living wage
Re: Dustin_TN 745 days ago
Regardless of original intent, are you opposed to a living wage? Are you opposed to full-time workers earning enough money to support themselves? Is that only a privilege for those with the means to higher education and higher earning potential? Who benefits from lower wages? Do you believe implementing a living wage for low wage earners would disrupt the economy? If so, for whom?

we are for a living wage right here and right now in present day society as long as people are willing to help us to feed the immediate communities. We will pay our worker $630 per week, our business will be open 7 days a week 365 days a year, as hunger doesn't take a rest it just kills. For some reason we think that this site is bs because no one is answering our questions or taking us very seriously, once we get our funding needed everyone will follow suit, look at our profile as we are for real and people need to really listen to what we have to say, either we will be on national televison or other wise, the time is now to take a stand to end the problem. if you are with us we can be reached at adavisjr123loanathotmaildotcom, we are ready to get busy and present our idea anywhere in the world today. GET AT US IMMEDIATELY, PEOPLE ARE F'N AROUND, IT IS WILD, EVERYONE WHO CLAIMS TO BE INTERESTED, THE WORLD IS ALREADY AWARE, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT, WE HAVE AN ANSWER AND PEOPLE ARE F'N AROUND COME ON PEOPLE, LET'S ROLL, GET AT US. Happy to be enlightened of problems being addressed in my own backyard. Even more happy for the individuals that tackled this issue. Kudos to your hard work and problem solving. I hope this will pay off for the workers at Vandy and to their families.

I'm not sure what the point of this is. I was offended with the images of Racism in this video. Is that supposed to make us take this issue seriously? What does that say about you? You interviewed 3 white kids. I resent when "filmmakers" use racial issues to add weight or tension to their little projects, and being that this is Nashville, ummmmm, gimme a f'ing break. You probably have issues with color yourself, and looking to make a quick buck. I pass on all of this.
Re: Dustin_TN 690 days ago
I can't quite put my finger on your anger/frustration, JABrown, but I'm glad to see you're not shy in expressing your sanctimony. I'm not exactly sure what "images of Racism" you're talking about and what you found so offensive. Shots of protests were included which were germane to this story. Should I have blurred out the protesters' signs of Dr. King or simply photoshopped out any people of color? Would that have suited you? Is it your contention that white people have no business addressing issues of race in this country at all? Can only black citizens address racism against black people or latinos address racism against latinos? Are you for segregated activism? Your totally unwarranted, unfounded insulting generalizations about Nashvillians as a whole as well as saying I "probably have issues with color" imply that, perhaps, you're the one who generalizes, categorizes, and judges others superficially and prejudiciously. While you're leaving trails of venom, others will be doing the hard work of actually fighting to make this a more equitable culture. Oh yeah, as for making a "quick buck"... I earned exactly $0.00 for this. I look forward to seeing what videos or other media you'll be posting as examples for us less enlightened to follow.

oh don't you go talking circles around me. Your little video ain't about Dr. King and I ain't seen no black people in it so my question to you is do you use black people as a crutch? and no I don't think a white guy from nashville is suited to tell my story so why don't you kiss my proud/black ass. i pass on all this mess!
Re: Dustin_TN 690 days ago
Rest assured I have no interest in trying to tell your story, JABrown. You're telling it all by yourself loud and clear.
