Kayla Whitaker had been meaning to donate to Barack Obama's campaign for a while, so when she received an e-mail from the campaign with the note that anyone who donated $5 or more would be eligible to win a chance to meet Obama at the Democratic National Convention, she went for it.
"And, it's not like I was going to get picked," Whitaker said. "I mean, Fargo, North Dakota... nobody cares, nobody even knows where Fargo is. Everyone thinks we're in Canada."
Despite thinking she had no chance of winning, she donated $15. A month later, the campaign called to let her know that she had been one of ten young people chosen to be "Backstage With Barack" before he accepts the presidential nomination. She and a guest will be flown to Denver on August 26, and stay until the convention ends.
Whitaker, 20, lives in West Fargo, N.D, and is a student at Minnesota State University Moorhead. She's also an evangelical Christian, and said she became an Obama supporter after logging onto his website and watching his "Call to Renewal" speech.
"I watched that, and I was just blown away by his wisdom," she said. "But, he was still upbeat and he didn't sound like a politician. He sounded like one man of God, speaking to other people who, either want to respect faith, or other people of faith. And it was just really refreshing. I was really surprised by it."
As a Christian, Whitaker said her strong faith doesn't always line up with Obama's policies. But, for the most part, she said her faith is guiding her support. And, she said she can't wait to meet the man she is hoping will be the next president of the United States.
"I just want to meet him and shake his hand," she said. "I'm not too worried about asking a big question."
Whitaker is taking a college friend with her on the trip, a Hillary Clinton supporter who also has an interest in politics. Whitaker said that she wants to see more young people care about what's going on in their country.
"Educate yourself and make sure you're voting because you know what you're voting for, not because of skin color or gender or something ridiculous like that," she said. "Vote because you're educated."
