McCain stiffs Ole Miss?
Posted September 24, 2008 at 9:15 PM

I knew when my 50 minute journalism class got dismissed after 20 minutes to watch CNN in the J-School lobby, something big was happening on the Ole Miss campus.

The university has been planning for the Sept. 26 debate for months, spending a mind boggling $5.6 million made up of private donations of course.  So when John McCain’s campaign announced McCain wanted to postpone the debate, the campus exploded in a mad frenzy.  And I mean mad.

Ole Miss student Trent Harmon, 19, said although he’s a McCain supporter, he is a little skeptical of the candidate’s motives in this move:

Student Ashley Barnett, 18, said McCain should come not only to let voters know where he stand on important issues, but because of the obligations he has made to the university, Oxford community, and the 3,000 journalists milling around campus:

Freshman Hannah Rowston, 18, said she sees both sides of the conflict, but McCain still should still hold up his end of the deal:

Another Ole Miss freshman, Jennifer Corum, 18, said it’s important that McCain debates on Friday because voters need to know what he plans on doing to fix the economy and his other plans for office if elected:

To keep up with the buzz on the Ole Miss campus about the Sept. 26 debate, keep checking back to my think.mtv.com page.  I will be updating accordingly!

Thanks for this story, Haley! I think we're all affected by McCain potentially not joining the debate, but it's really interesting to hear from students who are right in the middle of the controversy!

You have to think about the situation as a whole. McCain is a senator and congress needs him. He is a senator first and a presidental candiate second. Plus if the United States finacial situation is not addressed by congress now, do you really think you'll still be in college next year. Good chance is, you won't be able to afford it. So be thankful that McCain truly does put country first and understands that this congressional hearing is more important than some debate. This is why we need McCain as president, he actually cares about our country!
