So Long Denver (DNC Wrap-Up)
Posted September 02, 2008 at 1:14 AM

The past few days at the Democratic National Convention can be described as nothing short of absolutely INCREDIBLE! A lack of sleep, food, and sanity are the sacrifices that created an unforgettable trip to Denver that will hopefully make a difference this November. I met so many people ranging from celebrities, representatives, and delegates who were all as excited as I was to be a part of American history.

The trip started with a 4 AM alarm clock buzzing in Las Vegas, marking the start of journey that would that take me into the wee hours the next morning. After a short hour and half plane ride, I landed in Denver. I arrived at the hotel shortly after to freshen up before covering my first celebrity event; the J. Lo and Children's Defense Fund Party. The room was obviously an event tailored for A- List clientèle with a modern set-up, hors d'oeuvre that I couldn't pronounce, and of course, free drinks. Among the party guests, Jennifer Lopez gave a brief speech (see right), Gov. Bill Richardson made an appearance, as well as random celebrities including Rachel Leigh Cook and Angela Basset. The party was also a celebration of Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund. Shortly after the party, it was time to focus on the big evening event, the Voto Latino Party.

Without saying to much about the Voto Latino party, as a video will be right here on Thursday giving in depth information about the star studded event, I will say it was quite a night on the red carpet. I did not realize that the red carpet is not as big as it seems on T.V. In fact, it is tiny. Also, the red carpet is not just a convenient celebrity sighting spot, it is a battleground between you and the other reporters that want the same thing you do, face time with the beautiful people. This face time comes at a dangerous price, usually an elbow to the rib or camera from another media source blocking your shot. But I managed and scooped on some great interviews from Fat Joe, Wilmer Valderrama, Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, plus many more. But like I said, if you want an exclusive video, you need to check back here later on this week.

All of the celebrity sightings and meeting various representatives was a remarkable experience, but nothing can compare to the Barack Obama nomination acceptance speech on Thursday night. What you didn't see on T.V. was the supporters who had to show up hours before the big event and wait. This was due to an increase in security and blah blah blah. However, sharing a space with 84,000 supporters and millions more viewing at home is a moment that I will never forget. Please excuse me if I get a little emotional, sitting in seat, and looking around the stadium filled with every kind of human being imaginable really didn't get to me until I thought about it. The stadium was filled with white, black, Latino, Asian, gay, straight, man, woman, rich, poor, young, old, urban, rural, Obama supporters and Clinton supporters working collaboratively to turn a movement of change and hope into a reality. The feeling of unity, understanding, and love could be felt as I overheard nearby supporters swapping stories of what brought them to the Obama campaign and ultimately to Denver. When Obama finally appeared on stage, I realized that I was witnessing a moment of history that would be written into history books, and become a boring history lecture to a high school student in 50 years. Just as segregation, the civil rights movement, and MLK Jr. didn't make sense to me until I was into my college years, this moment will go under appreciated to the generation who do not know the hard work and sacrifice it took to for me to be able to sit in this stadium, at this very moment, and witness it with my own eyes. Needless to say, his speech seemed to last for only a few minutes rather than an hour. The fireworks flew into the sky marking the end of the primary season, and the beginning of the next months that are undoubtedly going to be grueling.

As the McCain and Obama campaign begin to throw their motors into full thrust, you can count on Street Team to bring you the latest coverage on the trails in innovative ways. I wish luck to the five Street Teamers who are bringing you the same kind of coverage from the RNC.
