Vegas Residents Fed Up
Posted July 11, 2008 at 1:10 PM

In the country's current state of economic affairs, it seems that everyone is doing at least a little complaining.   Who wouldn't complain about the high gas prices, the home mortgage crisis, and the weak dollar?  It seems that everyone is complaining, complaining, complaining, but no one is doing anything about it, except this group of fed-up Nevada residents. Local protesters took it right to a local Chevron gas station to express themselves on high gas prices and speak out against prospective presidential ties to the oil industry.

"I'm just out here enjoying the heat," joked Kevin Martin, a protestor who wanted to show his young son how the democratic process worked.  "I think the high oil prices have had some advantages, like sparking the renewable energy [conversation]."  He made it clear to me what his true motivations were for becoming active in the hottest part of the Las Vegas day. "I am an Obama supporter and am out here because John McCain, Bush, and the Republicans have ties to oil."  Like Kevin, approximately 30 other protestors shared his view.  From the small crowd, many parents were speaking to their kids about why it is important to become active in the political process.  Conversations were drowned out when the traffic signal turned green, and passing cars honked in support of various signs reading "Big Oil Buys Another President" and "McSame = 4 More Years". The protest was a part of a greater demonstration headed by MoveOn.org.  All demonstrations across the nation occured simultaneously.

Energy prices are definitely a hot button issue in this presidential campaign.  This issue affects everyone, whether you drive or not.  Considering that most of the food people eat in America is trucked makes for high food prices at your favorite fast food place.  Gas prices have also affected a broad variety of businesses, from car dealerships to locally owned brothels just outside the Las Vegas valley who is offering free gas for every trip.  It affects public transportation by increasing bus fares.  There are numerous ways to shake off expensive gas bills than buying an expensive hybrid.

-Saving on gas requires no more than a little forethought.  Instead of driving around back and forth from place to place, plan where you need to go and think of the shortest route possible.

-When scheduling your day, think of what side of town you will be on, and plan all activities on that side of town first.  This will save on running from one side of town to the other.

-Thinking of the drive-thru at a coffee shop?  Think again! An idling car will use much more gas than if you went inside and waited the three minutes it takes baristas to make your favorite iced latte!
