VIDEO:  A Portrait of Patriotism

Before we accuse candidates of lacking patriotism, we have to ask ourselves: what does patriotism really mean? In these perilous times, does supporting your country mean also supporting your government as we attempt to spread democracy abroad? Or is the very nature of democracy the right to question the government when its policy seems unjust, and speak up if you feel the country could be improved? Check out these definitions of patriotism from young patriots at Rehoboth Beach on July 4th.

Patriotism to me is loving your country enough to speak out when it is headed in the wrong direction.

I like the old saying from the Sixties: "My country, right or wrong. Let's keep it right when it's right, and make it right when it's wrong."

Patriotism is supporting your country always and your government when it deserves it.

Most people are oblivious to the struggle that is going on right now. Our government is treating its people just as Britan did before the revolutionary war for independence.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on whats for dinner.
The basis of our constitution is the individual is as sovereign as the country and more sovereign than any group could ever be. Democracy allows a majority (group) to enslave the rest through legislation. So in a free country I would be able to buy antibiotics with permission from noone.

The craziest thing is people pledge alleigence to a republic and wonder what is wrong with their democracy.

When you find out why this propaganda is the way it is, you will find out all you need to know about our current state.

In order to comprehend the present you HAVE to know the past!

Peace and Love,
Jason

This is why understanding patriotism and patriotic duty is important.

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country. -- Nazi Reich Marshall Hermann Goering at the Nuremberg War Trials

I am proud to be an American but I'm not always proud of my country. The war in Iraq has hurt our image with the rest of the world. This is a very passionate topic. Thanks for posting.
