VIDEO:  America Disconnected: Part 1

Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions in America and is by far the most culturally diverse American constituency. Young Muslim-Americans sit at the crossroads between faith, race and nationality. This video explores the lives of a young Muslim-American couple and how identity shapes their understanding of politics. It is Part I of a 2-Part series.

This is a really important issue that very few people are addressing at this time. It must be incredibly difficult to be a Muslim in American (especially a post-9/11 America). They have to grapple with their beliefs and culture and find a way to reconcile that with the modernity of western society. It doesn't help that many Americans view all Muslims as extremists and terrorists as a result of the 9/11 attacks. No one really knows the real Muslim-American. Many don't realize that they have the same dreams and face the same problems as any other American. They too worry about their job security, the flailing economy, or how they're going to pay for a hospital bill with no insurance. These are problems that we all share and can relate to. I believe this video is an important first step for us all to begin to discuss the issue of identity in America. We need to realize how wonderfully alike we all are while still cherishing our incredible differences.

It wasn't until I saw your video that I realized how little I know about the Muslim faith and culture. Like the other guy said, we know very little Islam and the people who follow it. That's something that really needs to change. They really aren't so different from the rest of us. This has really opened my eyes.

Wow, great video Patrick. Your stuff keeps getting better and better. This video made me reflect on this issue of identity. I can't imagine what it must be like to be a Muslim in a post-9/11 U.S. It really got me thinking and I think it will get a lot of other people thinking too. Can't wait till Part II!!

Thanks a lot. I think a lot young people reject that identity matters, but evidence shows that it is a if not the critical question they are grappling with. This video really is about intersections, which explores identity in the most direct way.

What a great piece!! Finally someone has the courage to talk about Muslims in this country and the issues they face. I can't believe no one else has covered this. Maybe the rest were too scared!!
Re: PatrickKennedy 50 days ago
Thanks. But I think that many have covered this issue and there's nothing to fear about this topic whatsoever.

this is great...love your intro! funny, i did a story about Muslim women and the hijab this week...check it out. good work Patrick!
Re: PatrickKennedy 50 days ago
Thanks a lot, Sia. I checked your video and it was really an interesting/spot-on companion to what I was trying to depict. Young Muslims, I think as you showed, really embody the American spirit.
