VIDEO:  Katrina Kids - Ex-Governor Talks

When you run for political office, you expect some difficult times. But for Kathleen Blanco, nothing could have prepared her for the worst natural disaster in American history. In one of her first interviews since stepping down as Governor of Louisiana, Blanco discusses her time in office and how Hurricane Katrina defined a new generation of young people.

This story is very compelling. We see just how much Gov. Blanco hurts. Just like her Louisiana brothers and sisters, she'll never again be the same. Although she puts on her sweet, happy face, she cannot mask her sadness. How would you or I reacted if dealt the same cards?

Cat, thanks for your comments. I have tremendous respect for those who try to serve and ultimately fail. I don't think anyone would have been able to deal with the crisis in an effective manner. Also, I think the media did not report the full political story behind the scenes as they should have. There were multiple dimensions involved.

A friend of mine went down to new orleans after katrina and he said it was the worst situation he had ever seen up close in real life. he ended up staying there longer than a week to volunteer and it was the first time he had ever done anything like that to help other people.
Re: PatrickKennedy 113 days ago
We have seen that this is the most civically-minded generation in American history -- volunteer speaking. What Blanco said was correct, the passion to do was there after 9-11, but Katrina really provided the opportunity. So passion meets purpose. If you look closely at this phenomenon, you'll find that it speaks volumes about the civic atmosphere in this country amongst young people, even in the election.

As horrible as this may sound, I am simply relivied that the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina has not been forgotten. I think she, as well as many others, hold onto the tragedy and speak their opinion. Informational video. I just wish the volume was a bit higher =]

I appreciate it. It was a terrible event, but history shows that great deeds are born out of despair. Our scars remind us, necessarily, of our past, which is clearly what people are showing in different forms in response to Katrina -- as you wisely mentioned. I'll work on that audio too. Thanks again.

PJK, I envy you for getting this interview! Also, nice use of B-roll, son! ;) I have to say, though, that I imagine my BFF (who was born and raised in NOLA and lives there now) would get angry watching the former governor speak. I do feel bad for the woman, though.

Don't be a hater, TRL Queen. Ha! I really enjoyed getting to know Blanco. Not for a second did I feel like I was talking to a politician. I sympathize with her and feel that the press had their time tearing her down, which anyone can do. Now it's time to learn from her considering she's got the best lessons to teach. Those who fall the hardest make the best teachers.
