Chickens are amazingly smart animals who can recognize 100 other chickens in a complex social hierarchy (pecking order). After holding a chicken in your arms like this, it would be pretty hard, I bet, to think about eating one. Her wings felt warm and soft, she rested in my arms peacefully though it wasn't all that happy about being there, and she enjoyed scampering down to rejoin her flock. Hard to say how a chicken's all that different from a dog - or why we'd eat one and not the other.
