Kyle Davidson can be found at the State Fair of Oklahoma snapping pictures of fairgoers with a life size, cardboard cut-out of Senator John McCain.
“It’s that time of year,” Kyle said. “We will be campaigning anywhere and everywhere, doing anything to get our candidates names out there.”
Of course November 4 is not only Election Day for President, but also for US Senate, State Commissioner, and many other elected offices. This Saturday, September 20, is a statewide phone banking day, so there is a good chance, if you live in Oklahoma, you may get some calls asking you who you will be voting for in local elections.
Stephanie Bates is leading efforts for phone banking in Norman, Oklahoma.
“I wanted to make everyone aware of a very important event this weekend, a Statewide Day of Phone Banking, Saturday, September 20, 2008. We will be phone banking from 11 am until 4 pm for Andrew Rice,” Stephanie said.
Stephanie, along with several University of Oklahoma students will be making calls to as many people in the state, getting Rice’s name and policies out there. Andrew Rice is running for U.S. Senate against incumbent Sen. Jim Inoffe.
Stephanie said the Young Democrats at OU have also been campaigning at OU Football games every Saturday.
“People think Norman is Andrew Rice country,” Stephanie said because Rice’s state headquarters is located in Norman. “But 85,000 people, plus some, come to OU football every week. Not all of them are from Norman.”
On Saturdays, Football is probably the most important thing happening in Oklahoma. While Andrew Rice supporters are campaigning, and tailgating in Norman, Oklahoma State University College Republicans are handing out lawn signs in Stillwater, OK.
Josh Pillow, President of OSU College Republicans, thinks it makes sense to campaign at football games.
“There are so many people at both schools on Saturday,” Josh said. “There are even people walking around that don’t go to the games. Why wouldn’t we go out campaigning for our candidates?”
The lawn signs being passed out in Stillwater are for several candidates, including, McCain and Palin, and Sen. Jim Inhoffe.
Oklahoma isn’t the only place Oklahomans will be showing their support. Believe it or not, Oklahoma Obama supporters are taking a trip to Missouri to help campaign in their state.
“Our neighbors in Missouri are in an extremely tight and hard-fought race, and help from fired up Oklahomans could make the difference on Election Day,” Jed Green, director of Oklahoma Young Democrats, said.
The state headquarters for Barak Obama is planning the Drive for Change campaign to talk to undecided voters in Oklahoma’s neighboring states. However, Jed said he understands that some might not be able to campaign out of state. He said there is plenty to do in our own state.
There is no telling where you’ll see people campaigning in the weeks ahead. Supporters of any and every kind of candidate will be popping up in unexpected places until November 4 finally arrives.
