Last week I talked to the Vice President of Young Democrats at the University of Oklahoma, Sam Ikard. He gave us his opinion on who he thought Barack Obama would pick for his Vice President, and when Obama would make the VP announcement. We still have not heard from either side who they will choose.
This week I talked to another “Vice,” not a vice president, but a vice chair of the College Republicans at the University of Oklahoma.
Like Sam, Stephen Nehrenz has been keeping up with national politics over the summer. Stephen is a sophomore at OU, he was elected to be one of two vice chairs during last spring semester. He said is very excited to see who John McCain will pick for his running mate.
“To be honest, I am not entirely sure who would be a great match for John McCain,” Stephen said.
He said that although the news reports McCain is looking at all levels of politicians for this role, Stephen hopes he goes with one of the former presidential candidates. He says he was pleased with many of the Republicans that were in the presidential race earlier this year.
“In my mind, I have seen Mitt Romney as a good match for John McCain, because Mitt Romney seemed to be a good bridge between more Conservative and more Moderate Republicans,” Stephen said. “I also think that Mike Huckabee could be a good fit for McCain. I know he is more conservative than McCain, but I think, and I think the primary results showed this, that Huckabee could help pull in some of those conservative Republicans that possibly feel alienated by John McCain. To me, they seemed to be the two best picks in my mind.”
As far as announcements by Obama or McCain, Sam thought that both cadidates would announce before the Olympics. The Olympics begin this Friday, so we may know sometime this week. However, Stephen doesn’t believe the announce will come that soon.
“ I almost think both will hold out until each respective National Convention to make their picks. That is just a feeling really, though,” Stephen said.
He said he believes if one of the candidates makes a choice, the other candidate will quickly follow.
