Summer Plans
Posted June 03, 2008 at 10:26 AM

It is now June and that means it is officially summer. Although school is out for summer break, school political organizations are still going strong. College Republicans and Young Democrats around the state are working hard to get students involved during the summer and the fall semesters. Young Democrats from all the universities in Oklahoma are gearing up for the Oklahoma Young Democrat State Convention this Saturday, June 7th. According to Josh Smith, president of Young Democrats of Oklahoma, the convention is a forum to elect new officers for the next school year, and to amend the Young Democrat’s constitution. Smith says there will be a number of elected official at the event speaking on a range of topics. The Oklahoma College Republicans from the University of Oklahoma are planning a trip to Oklahoma City this Thursday to help the state party. Throughout the summer, the group is encouraging students to attend the Republican State Party volunteer nights every Tuesday and Thursday at from 5:30 -9 p.m. “There are also plenty of local races to which we have offered a helping hand,” Tessa Breder, Chair of OU College Republicans said. Conner Ferguson, member of the Oklahoma State University College Republicans Chapter said that many members are helping with local campaigns as well. Students are offering help to Senator Inhofe for the U.S Senate race and Jim Halligan for the State Senate race. Many Young Democrats are also donating time to local races. Grant McLoughlin, President of the OU Young Democrats, said that several of his friends are interning for the Rice for U.S. Senator campaign. “Young people have long been a workhorse of campaigns and this year more young people are involved than ever before,” McLoughlin said. Both Republican and Democrat groups are getting ready for the fall semester. With the Presidential election in November, they want all students to be aware of the issues. “We are planning a giant Politics Week in the fall,” Sam Ikard, Vice President of OU Young Democrats said. “Our largest task this summer is planning for the year ahead. As we plan to make this coming year College Republican's best yet, we've been working incredibly hard booking speakers and brainstorming new events,” Breder said. “More than anything, our objective is just to get students involved.” All of these college organizations have Facebook groups with a list of scheduled summer events.
