Less than a month ago six people died in an Illinois school shooting. With that memory fresh in everyone’s minds, Arizona’s Legislature is looking at a bill to allow people with concealed-weapons permits to carry guns on school campuses. Looks like the Wild West could get even more rowdy.
This is a bill-affecting students of all ages around the state, and some are starting to take action. Supporters say concealed-weapons on campuses provide a defense mechanism for the students and teachers. Young people on both sides of the issue feel very passionately about it. One young woman started crying during her testimony in support of the bill at one of the committee meetings. The College republicans are celebrating the success of the bill on their listserv.
“Some of you might be glad to know that the bill to allow concealed (weapons) carry on campus passed the Judiciary Committee today. That means we're one step closer to having the Bill of Rights apply to the University!” the organization’s president announced in a weekly email.
Not all students support his bill however. The Young Democrats started a petition campaign to urge lawmakers to vote against the proposed legislation. In my next story find out what Arizona’s students think about this issue, and how they’re participating in the process before the bill becomes a law.
