When it comes to campaigning for the Presidency of the United States, the candidates often find much to disagree on. But bring up the subject of Americorps - the equivalent of a domestic Peace Corps - and McCain, Clinton and Obama are all pretty much on the same page.
When I attended a Town Hall Meeting in Exeter, N.H. last September, one young man brought up the subject of Americorps and McCain elaborated on how much he supported and respected the program. In other speeches, Obama and Clinton have issued similar statements.
Clinton obviously feels a special connection with the program because it began under her husband's administration. Obama, too, can relate to the importance of volunteer service and community-based programs because he spent time after schjool working for similar groups in low income neighborhoods in Illinois.
Volunteer service is resonating with young people all across the United States. I met several this past Saturday who were volunteering with Americorps' Victims Assistance Program in New Hampshire. Follow my link below to get details on a special project this group was focusing on to raise awareness about domestic abuse.
