In case you haven’t heard, let me fill you in on some good news.
Our government, in all its infinite wisdom, has kindly decided to give the American people roughly $150 billion back this year in what they’ve dubbed the “economic stimulus package.”
It means $600 to you, $600 to me and $600 to anyone else to files a federal tax return.
What’s wrong with free money, right?
Well, nothing…as long as you don’t stop too long to think about exactly where all this money is coming from.
For a government whose treasury is over $9 trillion dollars in debt, whose currency is floundering (compared to the Euro) and whose actual reverses pale in comparison to amount of paper money floating around out there, $150 billion seems like a big chunk of change to toss out.
But lawmakers on both sides of the floor have heralded the initiative as a great way to boost to America’s receding economy. The rationale is that by giving Americans money to spend, they will go out and actually spend. In theory, it works. In actuality, we’ll see.
I can’t help but wonder either if the economic stimulus package has anything to do with the fact that it’s an election year. I mean who wouldn’t reelect a lawmaker that voted to send them a $600 check during tax season?
These are certainly important point to ponder. It hasn’t stopped me, though, from planning a sunny California vacation in relief of this cold New Hampshire winter. Thank you, economic stimulus package.
For my video this week, I’ve put together a light-hearted, animated slideshow about this topic. Note my exceptional drawing abilities.
