Texas Sen. John Cornyn just can’t seem to catch a break lately.
The Republican senator continues to stir the pot of controversy and it has nothing to do with Big Bad John this time. Cornyn has been criticized for his decision to vote against limiting debate on a bill two weeks ago that would have stopped a 10.6 percent reduction in payment to doctors who serve Medicare patients. However, he decided to change his mind on the matter yesterday and voted to approve the bill afterall.
It looks like a certain group with tons of cash may have had something to do with the change of heart.
The Texas Medical Association withdrew their endorsement of the senator after he stated he would not vote for the Medicare bill. Doctors said they would stop taking Medicare patients because they don’t get enough money from the government-funded health plan as it is. It looks like all that pressure built up on Cornyn and his Senate companion Kay Bailey Hutchison, who had also voted against limiting debate on the bill. They both reversed their position on the bill and helped pass the measure.
I guess that’s the power of special interest groups.
Cornyn released a statement saying it was the bill was just a short term solution.
“Once again, the Democratic-majority has done nothing more than kick the can down the road, avoided the tough decisions, and delayed consideration of a long term solution for yet another day. Congress should be embarrassed to have doctors and seniors come to Washington hat-in-hand every six months or twelve months or eighteen months.”
But others are saying that Cornyn should eat his words. The blog Burnt Orange Report criticizes Cornyn for failing to produce a permanent solution to the Medicare problem, particularly when Congress was under Republican control.
And the whole debacle didn’t go unnoticed by his Democratic opponent Rick Noriega. He called Cornyn out on the flip flop.
"It's a true indictment of John Cornyn's judgment that he has twice needed weeks of public pressure before he would vote the right way on important legislation critical to Texas families. We deserve a U.S. Senator who will protect their families and values from day one."
You can’t help but think things are getting nasty for Cornyn and the campaign season is just warming up. Can’t wait to see what happens in November.
