Just stopped in at the local field offices for both Obama and McCain. Both offices are humming with activity, and the sound of wall to wall phone bankers. Volunteers are dropping in and out , too, for canvassing and lit drops.
Unfortunately, none of the campaign volunteers I spoke with were authorized to speak on the record, and picture-taking was absolutely off limits. *sigh*
Before that, I spent my morning at my local polling location, where all of the students from Bates College, here in Lewiston, also vote. Things were slow at first, but by about 10:30 studetns began coming out in full force from their morning classes. I also spotted a few studetns around town going door-to-door for the Obama campaign, making sure local supporters know when and where to vote. At the polls, I watched scores of students heading inside. On the way out, several reported that things are going smoothly inside and poll workers have been able to keep the lines moving along.
I spoke with students from both camps, including one who said she wished she could vote for Sarah Palin for president. I also spotted a student with a t-shirt for Bob Barr, the Libertarian prsidential candidate.
The weather is getting a bit warmer from this morning, when I said it was cold. In fact, I don't think I could have asked for a nicer day. Still, I'm a bit chilled from sitting outside the Lewiston Armory, talking to students. Starbucks is giving away free coffee to anyone who votes today. I think I'm going to go warm up with a cup before heading down to Brunswick, home of Bowdoin College, to talk to more students.
