Joshua Funk Gets Funky at the DNC
Posted August 30, 2008 at 9:40 PM

Joshua Funk

Age: 34

Hometown: Chicago

Job: Artistic Director - The Second City

Why did you attend the DNC?

I directed and performed in two shows on behalf of The Second City.

What was Second City’s role at the DNC?

We were hired to entertain the Democrat politicos.  Our Monday night show was for Senator **** Durbin and Congressman Rahm Emanuel and our Tuesday night show was for the Obama campaign's fund raisers.

How did you get the job to perform at **** Durbin’s Party?

The Senator's office contacted Second City.  He's already a big fan.  Then Second City called me.  I have directed several politically based shows for them in the past.  Also, Andy Cobb, Nyima Funk, and I have been having success with our political internet videos.  We've recently been featured on CNN, MSNBC, and FOX news.  People can see our videos at: www.youtube.com/user/Election08

Who/what did you spoof politically?

We took no prisoners….except for Obama.

How did you prepare for the DNC?

We certainly did a lot of riffing back and forth between Rahm and ****'s staff.  They gave us some rich inside info about the two.  Then we rehearsed once in LA and non-stop in Denver.

What was the reaction to your comedy skit? Did any politicians comment?

The crowds loved us and so did Rahm and ****.

(Joshua Funk (Left) & Illinois Sen. Durbin (Right))

Tell me about the spoof you did on Will.I.Am’s video last week?

The group responsible for that video is The Public Service Administration.  Our website is www.publicserviceadministration.com.   People need to know where John McCain is coming from.  He wants more war.  We don't need a soldier as president, we need a leader.

Who was the most exciting person you met at the DNC?

Meeting Michelle Obama was inspirational.  She should run for president someday.  Since both my parents are public school teachers on the south side of Chicago, it makes me proud to see a product of the Chicago Public Schools be at the top of our nation.  South Side!

Are there any political issues you like to address in a skit? Or, topics you chose to avoid?

I really enjoyed making fun of Bush.  As a comedian, I want to soak in these last few months with him as president.  It's been a comic gold mine for the last eight years.  We'll miss you Georgie!

Will you also be attending the RNC?

 Not unless I'm invited.

What is your most memorable moment at the DNC?

Taking a picture of my wife, Nyima Funk with Michelle Obama after her Monday night speech.
