The presence of Chris Simcox--cofounder of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps--on the DePaul University campus sparked a 24 hour prayer vigil and protest on campus. Immigration activists marched from the Little Village neighborhood to the Northside to protest Simcox and his scheduled appearance to speak on campus. Simcox, who was invited by a conservative group to campus, wants stricter laws passed to prevent and punish immigrants who come to the U.S. illegally. While Minutemen supporters arrived on campus saying they were present only to exercise their right to free speech, more than 300 students and Enrique Morones from Border Angels, led a march and protest saying hate speech has no place in this world, let alone on a Catholic Campus. Due to the outpouring of students on the Quad, traffic practically came to a standstill while Chicago police tried to implement tactics to control the growing crowd. In the end, Simcox still spoke at his scheduled time in the Athletic center to DePaul students and faculty--the media and public were not permitted in. While Morones wanted to debate Simcox, the university did not accept his request. However, they did have a professor on hand to offer students a different perspective on immigration rights, equality and other border issues.
