You know it is summer in Illinois when local farmers start dotting parks, highways and parking lots with their locally grown produce. This Thursday, Scottish rocker, KT Tunstall, took time to perform her hits songs and talk about the ways she has decided to go green (and that includes her bandmates), while local farmers sold sustainable produce and products to passerbys. Some hot items were bushels of flowers for $2 and pesto herbs. However, some vendors came with homemade soaps, salsa, cookies and even beeswax candles.
Many of the farmers I spoke with told me that people who decide to buy from these markets are actually helping the local economy and the Earth.Since local farmers come from nearby, less fuel is used to get the produce to the consumer. Also, their prices are competitive. You can get potatos for 10 cents apiece or bundles of asparagus for $1--this is a lot lower than the list price of these products at the local supermarket.
