On March 29th, the globe will come together to show it solidarity to protect Mother Nature with Earth Hour. Starting in Christchurch, New Zealand at 8 p.m., participating cities will turn off their lights for one hour in a cascading fashion. Chicago is this years flagship city because it was the first city to sign on to the project, according to Leslie Aun, spokeswoman for World Wild Life. This year, skyscrapers, organizations and residents in Cook, DuPage, Kane, McHenry and Will county will be taking part. Some historic landmarks will also be going black, including: the Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier, the marquee at Wrigley Field and the antennas atop the Sears Tower. Your Illinois street team reporter, Jacqueline Ingles, gives you a visual tour of Earth Hour in the following video:

Please be sure to join your reporter in turning off your lights from 8-9 p.m. To ensure safety, to stay illuminated, use a flashlight and not candles. Also, street lights and hospitals will not go black for safety reasons. Also, turning off your lights is completely optional.
Also, some people here in Illinois do not think Earth Hour is useful. A few newspaper editorialists are calling it "worthless" and having "minor impact" on a bigger problem. What are your thoughts?
