VIDEO:  Brain Drain

This is my submission for the MTV News Choose or Lose '08 internship for West Virginia. Enjoy! Nearly 70 percent of our state's budget goes towards education, and most of that goes into tuiton-waiving grants for students in good academic standing. But a large majority of those students leave the state upon graduation. What kind of effect will this have on our state? And what can be done to fix it? All filming and editing by me. I also put the music together using Soundtrack Pro.

I'm from West Virginia. Our state motto went from "Wild & Wonderful WV" to "WV..Open for Business." WV is a beautiful tragedy.

Why is wv last in job growth and doesn’t attract business, because they vote for the same liberal democrats that raise taxes on “evil big business” to pay for failing social programs. And last person I will listen to is a college professor, the ones who hold rally to keep business out of wv to save one tree..

I was just down in Charleston, WV over the holidays. It's in the same boat as Huntington with a negative population growth since the 50s. It's such a beautiful city. It will be interesting to see if creative folks who are getting priced out on the coasts will trickle in there. I've seen that happening with places like Omaha, Nashville and Asheville, NC.

Your video concerning the financial and economic situation in West Virginia is acurate and well done. As a recent college graduate, I find myself preparing to leave the state where I grew up to start a career and build a more stable financial future. It is very inspiring to know that we have local youth interested in the political and economic issues that concern our country. Keep up the good work and your supporters will continue to grow!
