Photo Update: The End of the Road

The unassuming location you see above is the Memorial Student Center, located in the middle of Marshall University, located in the middle of Huntington, located in the slightly-left-of-middle of West Virginia. The event taking place in the following photos was a bipartisan election results party -- in the image above, the Republicans are seated on the left, where they gleaned their information from Fox News. Democrats, on the right, viewed MSNBC.

Some might call this volatile arrangement a recipe for conflict -- though despite a few harmless jeers fired from one group to another (usually around the projection of battleground states), the mood in the room was relatively amiable.

The Republican half of the room celebrated early, with the projected results that West Virginia would side with McCain. In fact, they celebrated extremely early, as FOX News called the state shortly after polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Later, when MSNBC called the state for McCain, they made sure the Democrats in attendence didn't live it down.

The Democratic half of the room waited on pins and needles as each and every stated was accounted for. A bit of tension arose when West Virginia was called for McCain -- yet the final electoral tally of the evening left them unshaken.

Both parties filled in maps as their respective news stations announced their projected winners for various states. This was obviously taken very early on in the evening.

Two Democratic partygoers hold up a near-completed map, filled in shortly after California (and ultimately, the nation) was called for Obama.

Despite losing West Virginia by a wide margin, Obama won the election, and will be the 44th president of the United States of America. The Democrats, a handful of which are pictured above, were understandably thrilled about this fact.
