Wichita's Congressional Hope

Kansas State Sen. Donald Betts has "had a life," as he puts it. Born in Wichita, his family found themselves homeless at times. When they moved to Las Vegas when he was young, they landed in a drug- and prostitution-riddled neighborhood. His friends, he says, ended up in jail or in the morgue.

 

So it's surprising, perhaps, to see Betts, 30, sitting behind his desk on the floor of the Kansas Senate chambers. After all, so many people are anchored down by the environments in which they grew up. But not Betts. He entered the Kansas House at age 25. Soon, he was a senator.

 

Now, he's literally packing up his office, and embarking on a run for U.S. Congress. Here's his story:
