This blog is all about Kansas, and Choose or Lose 2008
The Sunflower Electric Company wants to build two coal-fired energy plants near Holcomb, Kan., in the western part of the state. They say it will bring money and jobs to the state. But Gov. Sebelius has just vetoed the proposal for the second time, saying it could have negative effects on our air and environment. She argues we should invest in wind energy, and the bill would reduce the powers of the heatlh and environment secretery, who nixed an air quality waiver for Sunflower earlier.
Not only that, but most of the energy would be sold off to states, like Colorado and Oklahoma. Kansas would recieve only 8 percent of the power generated by the plants....and we'd get the emissions.
In a state where there is less that $2 million spent annually on lobbying, about $1 million has been spent by coal plant supporters. The state legislature is meeting soon to debate the bill and its veto. They have until May 29 to override it.
