Who is Ron Paul and Why Does it Matter Anyway?
Posted January 17, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Theres a blimp flying across South Carolina with his name on it and a random television commercial expressing his views on immigration. That pretty much sums up what most of South Carolina knows about Ron Paul. So who is the man behind the blimp and why does it matter anyway? Poll results from the Palmetto State signal the clear front runners in both the Republican and Democratic Parties; Paul doesnt make the cut. Straw polls, however, show something a little different. Paul is a hot topic of conversation in grassroots communities. In late 2007 he had the largest one-day fundraiser in US political history by raising six million dollars in 24 hours via the internet, mostly through supporters independent of his campaign. In fact, grassroots efforts like the money bomb are responsible for the Ron Paul blimp weve seen hovering over the state this week.   Believe it or not the blimp has nothing to do with Pauls campaign. Individual supporters, completely separate from the campaign, are funding the blimp with their contributions. According to RonPaulBlimp.com, reports show the first ten days of blimp flight generated a minimum of $500,000 in publicity. So what is so appealing about Paul that voters would quit their jobs (not an exaggeration) to chase his dream? Supporters say its the message, not the man. The majority of Paul supporters are young people.   So far he has finished sixth in Iowa and fifth in New Hampshire (ahead of Fred Thompson).   So maybe he doesnt matter as a frontrunner, but the fact that he as an independent is able to inspire so many young people and raise so much money MATTERS.

This week I had the opportunity to ride in the Ron Paul Blimp with some of the supporters who have made financial contributions to maintain it. I hoped this would offer me the opportunity to discover why they were such strong supporters of his campaign. Days later, Im still scratching my head on this one. Paul is a registered republican running as an independent (libertarian) in the upcoming elections. Something you may not know this isnt Pauls first run for the White House. Back in 1988 he ran for president as the Libertarian nominee. The Texas Representative distinctively differs from Republican candidates in method and from Democratic competitors with his stance on healthcare. Paul is strongly opposed to universal healthcare. In fact hes opposed to all government subsidies, including federal student aid. I called three schools in South Carolina. At the College of Charleston 68 percent of enrolled students receive some kind of aid, at Clemson University 72 percent of students receive some form of aid (40 percent alone in federal aid), and at Coastal Carolina University75 percent of students receive federal financial aid. So why again might young people (especially college students) be attracted to a candidate like Paul?

Thats a great question, one Im still not sure I can answer. I can tell you what supporters do like about him. According to supporters of the Ron Paul blimp young voters are his stance on immigration, his opposition to the war in Iraq, and his staunch belief in following the constitution. Frankly, I dont get it. Going into the Michigan and South Carolina primaries, Pauls chances for success are equal to that of a snowball in the lowcountry outlook not so good. This isnt to downplay Pauls significance; grassroots efforts by his supporters are certainly noteworthy. Unfortunately for him, the ability of grassroots communities to rally so successfully behind a candidate is what matters most about his campaign. It wont happen this time, but it will be interesting to see how future elections are pushed along by increasing grassroots efforts (especially with the internet as a tool). Ron Paul the man, not the blimp, returns to South Carolina on Friday (1/17/2008) for a Stronger America Rally with Veterans.

Wow, you rode in a blimp! Not to overlook the thrust of your story, but I'm very impressed! That would scare me. Now being in Ron Paul's blimp...that might really scare me. Not that I don't appreciate his anti-war and pro-constitution stances. I'm all for that.

Thanks so much for doing this story!  I saw Ron Paul posters and supporters all over Nashville when I went to the Music City Bowl game over New Year's.  Those Ron Paul rally members are quite a rowdy bunch.  It is good to know that Ron Paul is an actual person, and it's pretty cool that he has a blimp :)  *ha ha ha*

People don't realize just how wonderful Ron Paul is! Eventually you will find out how on the spot he was about his predictions of the future of the USA. Not one candidate is as educated as this man. He is also the only candidate who did NOT take money from other sources. Just his supporters. We love this man because he is a true Patriot who believes in the Constitution. As far as federal substities are concern...there are other ways of garnering money for college. Parents need to express to their children how important an education is and support their children to do well in secondary school so that they may earn scholarships. It can be done if you work hard enough for it. Then there are church scholarships etc.

He just wants less federal government. The states have funding for college. My son uses part of the Lottery for his scholarship money. The other is the President's scholarship at the College of Charleston. There are plenty of avenues for scholarships without using federal grants...ask the percentage that are NOT using federal grants just where are they getting the funds!

You have no idea what you are missing by not reading Ron Paul's letters and stances on every subject! He cares about us!  He is still in the running for the Republican ticket..it is not over till the fat lady sings. He will stay in, until there are no supporters there for him! His ideals are fantastic!

If we do not adopt his ideals our country will not be around much longer. What kind of legacy is that for our children and grand children?

I am voting for Ron Paul no matter what.  To me, he is the only choice that isn't status quo.
