Dear President Obama and Members of Congress,

Our drug laws aren't working. Every year, millions of Americans are arrested on drug offenses, yet drugs are more available than ever before. High school students find it easier to get marijuana than alcohol or prescription drugs. And Mexican drug cartels have become rich and powerful, representing a growing threat to our national security.

With our economy struggling, we can't afford to waste billions of dollars every year on a policy that has failed. There's only one way to eliminate the drug cartels' profits and effectively deal with drug abuse as a public health issue: Legalize and regulate drugs.

It's time to end drug prohibition.

Completely laughable. You want to end it because you use drugs, and you want to stifle that pesky guilt thing that sits on your shoulders every time you come down from your self-induced stupor. Tell me, has legalizing alcohol actually stopped alcohol abuse? What has it done for DUIs across the nation? The truth is, even if drugs were legalized and regulated, Mr. Marley, it wouldn't end the legal trouble. Again, just look at all the trouble with DUIs. Lowering the litigation bar doesn't take care of the moral implications here. It just makes it easier for people who don't like to deal with their problems to avoid responsible and healthy resolutions.

HARDLY.
what this is about misscherie, if you think about it. when you legalize drugs fewer kids will be useing becuase you would have to be at a certain age.
this would be extremly good for our economy. and not only that, there would be fewer deaths because the weed wouldnt be laced :)

also another thing, nobody can die off of smokeing a "little too much weed" however drinking too much, people can die from that.
its a no brainer really.
LETS ALL MOVE TO AMSTER DAM! spread the love of weed

The usual response from individuals that are unable to make a solid point is to accuse others of something based on their opinion. Many, many people and groups feel that the war on drugs is not working and that regulation/control makes more sense than prohibition. This includes but is not limited to professors, teachers, clergy, doctors, lawyers, police, substance abuse counselors (myself having worked as one), parents, judges, etc... They don't have this point of view because they use illegal drugs - they have it because they have seen prohibition causing more harm than good. Since the War on Drugs started, use of drugs has gone up, purity of drugs has gone up, availability has gone up, and price has gone down. If that is successful policy to you - you don't really care about reducing drug abuse.

I do not want to legalize/reform drug policies for my own personal gain. I want to do it because I'm sick of seeing kids buy illegal drugs easier than legal drugs, seeing kids get put on waiting lists to get counseling for meth addiction because too many kids with a first time marijuana offense are court ordered to go to counseling whether they need it or not, i'm sick of seeing gangs and drug cartels cause violence and existing only because of prohibition.

You say legalization will make it easier - however, the Monitoring the Future Survey shows that more 10th graders (and there is little difference among other grades) are smoking marijuana than tobacco, which is legal. My point is - we can really focus on substance abuse and shift resources to where they belong if we stop wasting them on what we know does not work. Nicotine is the most addictive drug on the planet and use among teens and the general population is dropping and we've done that without arresting a single person. Instead, we used common sense education, legalization/regulation, and it worked.

Legalizing alcohol has not reduced alcohol addiction. What it did was put violent criminals out of business. It put limitations on who could purchase alcohol. It opened up resources for alcoholics to seek help. AA wouldn't even exist if alcohol were still prohibited. Alcohol was not made legal because it is good for people or safe. Its prohibition was repealed because it was an absolute failure exactly like current prohibition is and both cause more harm than good. Furthermore, we do not need to legislate morality.

The problem with people like you is you don't actually care about drug abuse. You care about pointing the finger, making others feel bad about themselves, while climbing higher up on your pedestal that will eventually tumble over. If you did care, you be rationally debating the issue, asking for more information on my point of view, how I came to it, etc... Instead, you make false accusations and assumptions, call me Mr. Marley (who wrote far more songs about God than he did about weed by they way), and don't back up any of your claims with evidence. Until you're willing to grow up and have a big person conversation - maybe you should stop replying to my posts. :)
