From the Rio Grande to the Pacific Ocean, Gas Woes
Posted July 02, 2008 at 12:35 PM

This past week I traveled from the Rio Grande River in New Mexico to the Pacific Ocean in California. When I returned to New Mexico, I never thought I would be so thankful to see gas at just under $4 a gallon. The average price of gas in Los Angeles is $4.43 (www.maps.google.com) per gallon but I also saw gas as high as $4.89 per gallon in different parts of the city for regular unleaded gas. The drive from New Mexico to LA is one that I have made quite a few times but this time it was painful. As I saw the price of gas rise and rise as we passed westward into each new city, county and state it was gut wrenching.
The average price of gas in Albuquerque, New Mexico is about $3.80 (www.newmexicogasprices.com) a gallon. Luckily my car is gas efficient otherwise this trip would not have been possible. My original plan was to fly in and out of LA from Albuquerque, but the recent increases in flight costs made my trip even less possible. After some careful planning, I decided that the more economically efficient way to travel was to drive! Knowing that gas would only get more expensive as I approached the Pacific Ocean this didn’t seem plausible. Neither did a $500 airplane ticket. However, the trip was necessary as I had an awesome internship opportunity awaiting me in LA.
The drive to and from made me think about the road trips I used to take with friends out to LA in the earlier years of the millennium and how we took for granted the $1.45 a gallon gas, then the $2.59 a gallon gas, now even the $3.80 a gallon seems to be a relief to see. Knowing that the price of gas will most likely not decrease any time soon, it really made me wonder where gas prices are going and how much we will be paying per gallon. I think more importantly, it made me think about what other people outside of the country are paying for gas and what our price of gas is costing them. It made me think that now more than ever we live in a global community of countries, nations, cultures, beliefs, religions and societies that all have to survive and sustain life together.
