This is a very hard issue to deal with in our society; for many years America has tried to deal with the difficulties of racism. Today is October 13,2007, I was watching t.v. today and i went past MTV, i stopped to listen to the commercial . It was MTV NEWS, I was listening to the topic of the Jena 6 and i had realized this was not the first time i had heard this. This year i had enrolled in AP English and my teacher had us do a project with news articles. I was reading Newsweek to look for article and i came across the controversial topic of the Jena 6. I have always felt very strongly against racism, and this story was unbelievable to me. I could not believe that these boys were being charged for attempted murder over a simple spot in the shade. It is amazing to me that we are coming into the year 2008 and still we have not worked overcome the flaw that had been hurting our country for many years. I agree strongly with a quote that was said of one of the parents of the Jena 6, "Jena does not want to come up to the 21st century. They are living deep in the past." I hope one day that our great nation can get past this issue of skin color and live beside each other peacefully.

What bothers me about Jena 6 is not that the kids were charged with a crime in this case but how overly racist that district attorney obviously is. According to one article that I read, he showed up at a school meeting following some fights after the noose incident. He faced the black students (the students separated themselves into white and black groups at that meeting) and said "with one stroke of my pen, I can make your life disappear."

Later, as you know, he ensured that the group of black students faced that ridiculous charge of attempted murder that should have been assault... Of course, the charges against the white students who hung the nooses were a lot less severe.

That attorney deserves to be fired immediately.

I told as many people on my campus about the silent protest and what colors to wear. . . sad to say people still had closed minded thoughts about it. One guy told me that the silent protest around campus would add nothing but more fuel to the fire. For those who still may be unsure about the Jena 6. . . people aren't just mad because black people were in jail. There is anger because both blacks and whites should have been in jail for their wrong doings, and that did not happen. For anyone who things racism in America is dead, WAKE UP!It may not be the 1950's, but our country still has a way to go.

I think this issue shows how the world hasn't changed. People thinks that racism is a thing of the past when it's still here. Lets get together and do something!!!!!!!!!! FREE THE JENA 6!!!!!MUCH RESPECT
