The R&B singer begs his mom to get help in 'I Won't Love You to Death,' premiering Sunday at 10 p.m. on MTV.

Having a parent addicted to drugs is traumatizing for any young person, even those who are surrounded by fame and fortune.

Mario proves this much to be true in "I Won't Love You to Death: The Story of Mario and His Mom," a thinkMTV documentary that chronicles the R&B singer's touching relationship with his mother, Shawn, a heroin addict. The film premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. on MTV.

"By doing this type of thing, I feel like I'm saying to her, 'It's OK, what you're doing is OK,' " the Baltimore native explains in a scene in which he takes Shawn shopping. "In the back of my mind, it would feel better if I knew I was doing this for my mother [when she were] well. I felt like after I left [the store], maybe I should have said, 'No. Until you get better, I'm not doing anything for you.' But sometimes it's hard to face reality."

The doc opens with the singer narrating his accomplishments, from debuting as a young teen with his 2002 hit "Just a Friend" to his later breakout, the Ne-Yo-penned "Let Me Love You." But while his career was taking off, Mario says he was struggling with his mother's addiction, which continued to weigh heavily on him.

In one of the more memorable scenes in the film, the singer describes seeing needles throughout his home as a child, constantly worrying about his mother and sometimes not seeing her for days or weeks on end. Mario was raised in a single-parent home and eventually stayed with his grandmother while his mother was at her worst.

"I want to give you the gift of life, like you gave me," Mario pleads with Shawn during an intervention he organized with her boyfriend and close friend. Though his mother is far from strung out, she has, at that point, refused treatment and relapsed several times after short periods of sobriety.

Throughout the documentary, Mario and his mother exchange stories, swap jokes and genuinely look as close as a parent and child can be. Mario gives his mother credit for kick-starting and supporting his career, even after he moved to New Jersey to live with his first manager and only saw Shawn sparingly.

But their relationship is turbulent too. Mario is often seen trying to talk to his mother about how her addiction affects everyone around her, and he balks that she's still getting high and spending so much time in the bathroom. For her part, Shawn steadfastly refuses to admit her problem and incites a confrontation with Mario's manager, trying to edge her way into her son's career. Mario wants to welcome her in, especially to help him out while he's on tour, but he's afraid she's not quite ready.

In the end, though, after much determination, his mother decides to enter treatment at a facility in Los Angeles.

"I'm tired of living my life in the bathroom," she tells Mario. " 'Cause one day I may go in there and never come out."

After the documentary airs on Sunday, think.MTV.com will host a discussion with Mario and provide resources on coping with substance abuse.

I admire you for allowing your fans to witness a harsher side of your life, instead of just the glamorous aspects of the music industry that are usually portrayed by the media. I think that this documentary will benefit your mom. yourself, and your millions of fans across this country, because everyday common people from the inner-city that are victims of drug abuse can now be optimistic about there futures instead of giving up. You or your mother should consider being a public speaker for inner-city youth on DRUG ADDITION.

I was deeply moved by your committment, love, care and concern for your mother. My question to you is..."what steps are you taking to secure your own emotional stability and well-being during this time? Have you sought individual counseling and therapy as well as support groups like Co-da? My mother was also addicted to drugs while I was young. Fortunately, she overcame them and has been clean for many years. However, it did take a terrible toll on my family. I had to seek counseling and support and now I am successful and emotionally secure. I would strongly encourage you to do the same. My other question is where is the extended family? Aunts, cousins, brothers, uncles, etc. Take care. You are in my thoughts and prayers. "With God all things are possible!"

Mario I was in tears last night watching your story. A young man like your self should not be going through this. Donot give up on your mother. keep bring her to drug rehabs intill she is fully recovered. Donot support her drug addiction. I'am a big fan of yours because you give us good music. when I buy your album I know I will love every song on the album. You have alot of R&B artist out now that cannot deliver good music like you do. Be strong for your mom and she will thankyou in the end. I will like for you to keep us posted on your moms rehabilitation.

Before last night I knew nothing about Mario other than that he is some young singer but after watching that docomentary, I have so much respect for him.He needs all the encouragement he can get and I hope that all you Mario fans stick by him and let him know that he is not alone. What he is doing for his mom is so commendable, I lift my hat off to him.Send him e-mails and let him know that he should not give up on his mom, she is all he has when his he is no longer in the spotlight. He had me all "teary-eyed" when he was on the phone talking to his mom from his hotel room in N.Y.

Your story about your mom really inspired me, it brought tears to my eyes to see that you are struggling to save someone that you really love. Everything that you are doing to help your mother survive is a wonderful thing. If I could help prevent to save one of my family memebers from something like this I would inspire them to get help so that they will live a better life than they are now. But just keep your head up and keep on praying and just hold on because GOD is seeing what you and your mother are going through and each day he's lifting the pain away slowly. Stay strong Mario.....And I will keep your mother in my prayers...LOVE YOU LOTS (ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST FANS) Tiffany G. from VA

For Mario & Shawn, words can not describe the feeling I got from watching your documentary. I had to deal with both my parents addiction and it was very hard. Today they are both clean and sober....Watch for my book. I commend you Shawn...

Mario and Shawn~

I am a product of the struggle. My father, brother, uncles, aunts and a host of family members all struggle with some form of addiction. I was thankful that you Mario stepped out from behind the lights and screaming face to share your story. The one thing you learn to do when you have a loved one held in the grips of addiction is mask your feelings. Had you not shared your story, who would have ever known the burden you carried. It was touching, moving and inspiring. I pray that your mom has the strength and determination to stay clean and sober. I hope that you finally find the peace of mind that has eluded you for so long.

All the best to you and your mom

I am a recovering meth addict (been clean & sober for 2 years) with 3 sons and I am still haunted by the things I put my boys trough during my active addiction. Thank you for keeping it so real and hang in there...my advice to you: You will help her the most by helping her less. I had to lose everything before I was willing to do whatever it took to have something different.

I am so glad that you shared you struggle with your fans and the rest of the world as you showed your vulnerability. I know it was hard to speak against what your mother doing because you respect her as your mother and you love her. It has to be even harder dealing with her addiction in the business you are in where you are required to put in non-stop hours of hard work. I love seeing Black men that whole heartedly love their mother and strive for the best in life. You are truly an amazing person because you simply did not give up. I'm praying for you and and your mother so that God will continue to strengthen both of you as together ya'll strive to make a better life. May God continue to bless you as He as already done.

After watching this show yesterday and being an avid watcher of MTV shows both past and present, I think this one ranked the highest for me. I swear giving my ustmost respect to Mario for his courage and talent. It's crazy how you go through life feeling as if you're the only one who has problems then a person like Mario with such status shares his story for all to view and I couldn't even imagine going through half that battle. I commend you Mario for allowing us to partake in this sad but truthful part in your life and it is because of people like you, that I beleive goodness still exists in this world. You are a remarkable young man to never have given up on your mom, when she truly had given up on herself, most others would have grown up to be bitter, but God bless you for being one of the few to show that true goodness exists. I beleieve that GOD let this battle go on in your life and gave you the talent, to someday be able to help your mom with her battle and it is because of who you are Mario that GOD will bless you always... You touched me in a way that I could not express but I will use your kindness as an example and hopefully better myself to be able to help others. God Bless you...and thank you...

Sandy.

I have always admired you as a person and I would have never known how hard it was for you if you didnt open up and say it. I will pray for your moms recovery and only wish the best for you. I know what drugs can do to a family member first hand, but the only difference is my family member wouldn't accept any help or listen so Im still dealing. Love you always a big fan and a true friend in spirit Jackie.

It's a harsh reality too face. To know that the person who gave you life isn't concerned with the well being and quality of their own. For you to come out of this a stronger, more determined, and successful man says a lot about the strength of willpower you posess. What most young adults don't realize is how easy it could've been for you to follow down the same path. Instead you saw the light at the other end of the tunnel and you're just waiting for your mom to follow. I was extremely touched by the choice you and your mom made to allow such a documentary to be made. It can be easy to forget that celebrities are human too, despite knowing the obvious. A man, no matter his riches or his fame, is truely a man of character when he is not afraid to show how vulnerable he is when it comes to matters of the heart. I applaud you and admire both the courage of you and your mom.
