MTV's Choose or Lose is looking for aspiring journalists to cover the 2008 election via written stories, vlogs and photos.
from  MTVNews

Citizen journalists! Visionaries! Vloggers! This is your year. Now more than ever, the presidential candidates know that every vote counts, and that local campaign stops can be covered and spread worldwide by anyone with a cell phone. You have power.

As part of our collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Knight News Challenge, MTV is looking for one aspiring reporter from every state and Washington, D.C., to be part of our Choose or Lose team. We know that you're already hitting the streets and doing this work. So now we're giving you the chance to join a national team of journalists in covering this unprecedented election year from a youth perspective.

Ideal candidates will have their fingers on the pulse of issues that are important to young people in their states and be passionate about politics and the possibilities of new technology. Strong writing and reporting skills are a must. A distinctive voice and an authoritative point of view? Even better.

We'll load you up with some production gear and bring you to MTV's headquarters in New York City for orientation. In return, you will be expected to work in a paid, part-time capacity to file video, written or photographic stories weekly throughout the election year. Your pieces will be posted online and spread to mobile devices — and the top stories will be broadcast on MTV, MTV2, MTVU or MTV Trés each week.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes journalistic excellence worldwide and invests in the vitality of the communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers.

Requirements: · You must be at least 18 years old by December, 2007. · You must reside in the state you are covering from January to November, 2008. · You must have the time and ability to travel within your state and file at least one video, written or photographic story per week.

Applications can be filled out and submitted at think.mtv.com through September 26, 2007.

To Whom it May Concern:

I have been trying to apply to be a reporter for Arizona in the Choose or Lose program. It says the deadline is September 21. Since 10pm I have been submitting my application, but the website keeps responding "collection is null"
I am just confused to why the collection is over if it is still September 21st. Also on your website, it says "Applications can be filled out and submitted at think.mtv.com through September 26, 2007." at http://think.mtv.com/044FDFFFF0002D79C00160098987E/
I hope this is just a misunderstanding, and I will still be able to submit my application as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance

To Who it May Concern (as well):

I was alerted to this opportunity after the 21st, but I read on the website that the deadline was the 26th. I just submitted my application, and I am hoping that I will not be overlooked due to the confusion of the deadline.

Any help?
Kristin_MTV 795 days ago
Hello all- Sorry for any confusion that is being caused. To answer xandeloach- the deadline to apply actually is the 26th so therefore if you do submit your application by this time you WILL NOT be overlooked.

Pstrois - Unfortunately this position is only open to those who will be residing in the state that they apply to represent in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

What exactly does "Collection is null," mean, and why do I keep seeing it?
Kristin_MTV 794 days ago
Thank you for your interest in applying to be a Choose or Lose journalist. If you received the "collection is null" message it probably means one of two things:

1) The application timed out before you had a chance to enter all of your answers (It usually times out after about 20 minutes). In order to avoid this, please answer all questions on the form in a third-party application (Microsoft Word, Word Pad, Google Docs, etc.) and save your material. Then post and submit your answers in the form.

2) Your essays were actually over 300 words. Try doing a word count and if this is the case, resubmitting with essays with under 300 words.

If you tried both of these things and you are still getting the "collection is null" message, please let us know. We are still troubleshooting. Thanks again!

Hi Kristin,
I tried doing both of those things and I still received the "collection is null message". Is their another way to send my application and work samples?
jabutler 794 days ago
I would love to apply but I cannot find the application! Is there a url or something I can find on the site that would link me to it?

To Whom it May Concern

I just today found out about this opertunity, and would not like to paas it up, but I was woundering if I do not post some of my video interview would my aplication be seen as less desirable.

I have video interviews completed, the only issue is if I can get them converted before the deadline on the 26th.

Thank you
Ahmed Ismail

When an application is submitted successfully one just gets a “thank you” page, right? I’m a little nervous about my application because I got the message “collection is null” quite a few times, and then I finally got the thank you page. Is this what everyone else is getting? No conformation number, right?

Also, for those who are getting the null response, I suggest trying to send it on a PC. I got the null response more when I was trying to send my application on my Mac. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but it’s worth a shot.

Good luck everyone. I think this is a great opportunity!
Re: Kristin_MTV 793 days ago
If you received a thank you page - all is well and your application should have came through to us.

Thank you!

I definitely have to say that MTV is pretty kick ass for having something like this. And I know that by have a person from each state report on the 2008 election, this will allow the MTV audience to have a better idea of how the presidential election effects every corner of the country.

Hi
I applied last week and was wondering if my application was received . Also, I sent an email because I had problems uploading the writing samples. I could "browse" for the attachment, but not "upload" it, so I sent an email with the samples- is that OK? (Ariana from DC)
Re: Kristin_MTV 793 days ago
Ariana - Your application was received along with a writing sample that was uploaded from the application page.

I'm having the same issues as jessbralish. I submitted my application and got the "null" response, but I hit reload and received a "thank you." I just wanted to confirm that you received my application. Just a little nervous.

-Patrick.
Re: jessbralish 793 days ago
Kristin,
If you check on Patrick’s status, would you please check on mine too? I’d feel a lot more comfortable. I realize this could get burdensome, so I just wanted to say thanks for all your help!

I am trying to apply to be a journalist for the state of Wisconsin and have been recieving the "collection is null" notice. I see I am not the only one and have tried three other times. I also see that we should be recieved a Thank You email once our application has been recieved and I have not recieved such an email.
I also did a word count and all questions were answered in less than 300 words and I copied my responses from a word document.
Are there any suggestions as to why how I can apply before the deadline tomorrow?

Thank you for your help.

Hi MTV News Staff,
I want to load my story clips I produced for the government access channel I work for, but it is java script. I have a link to where it is archived, but not directly to the video itself. What do you recommend I do, so that I may submit my application before the September 26th deadline?

To see what I am talking about, the link to where the show is archived is here, http://santabarbara.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=11.

I have segments in the June, July, August, and September episodes of Inside Santa Barbara...

I am so sorry... But I have been having the same problem as well. I'm trying to apply to represent New York, and I got the "collection is null" message. Is there a way for me to e-mail you my info?
Thanks a lot,
Tamara
