Virginia Prifti with Maggy Darling

Now that June has ended, we like to reflect on the brilliant and innovative fundraising events that people held in the PlayPumps International community that month case in point, an event at No 11 Downing Street in London!

On June 11, 2009, Maggie Darling, wife of Right Honorable Alistair Darling, Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom, hosted a reception with Virginia Prifti to honor and support Lawrence’s Roundabout Well Appeal. The appeal was held in honor of Virginia’s son, Lawrence, who passed away in 2005 from Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare genetic degenerative condition. Lawrence was only eight-years-old.

Virginia contacted Roundabout Water Solutions, PlayPumps International’s partner in South Africa, with the idea of raising funds for one PlayPump® system to be installed in South Africa in memory of Lawrence. Her enthusiasm and commitment to the project were so contagious that she was soon raising funds for multiple systems. Her campaign soon evolved into the formation of a U.K. charity in 2005 entitled, Lawrence’s Roundabout Well Appeal.

Mrs. Darling met Virginia and was so inspired by the concept of PlayPump® water systems that she offered Virginia the prestigious venue of the State Room at No. 11 Downing Street. Since June 11, 2009, marked the 4th year since Lawrence’s death, the date was chosen to both commemorate Lawrence and to celebrate the 25th PlayPump® water system installation provided by the Appeal.

A crowd of supporters and potential donors attended the reception. They included teachers and pupils from schools that are raising funds toward a PlayPump® system; and individuals who have run in marathons, held tea parties, asked for donations in lieau of presents at 40th, 50th or 60th birthday parties, or given donations in memory of loved ones who have passed away.

A generous benefactor, Peter Savage, announced his donation of £30,000, and with the other donations collected at the event, five PlayPump systems were funded!

Congratulations to Lawrence’s Roundabout Well Appeal in having now provided 30 PlayPump installations! Thank you to all who had a hand in putting on the event and who attended the event and a huge round of applause to all who gave support to our cause!
