Even though Speech tours the world with his conscious lyrics and alternative beats, he hasn’t forgotten his roots or his community.
Every year the Arrested Development frontman returns to Wisconsin for Summerfest, Milwaukee’s 11-day music festival. But he doesn’t come for the music, he comes for the food. Actually he comes to serve the food… corn to be exact. That’s right, every year this hip-hop star turns off the mic and fires up the roast in support of his family’s 31-year tradition.
In 1977 Speech’s father, Robert Thomas began Robby’s Corn Roast at Summerfest. Speech first worked the stand as a kid, but it wasn’t until Robert suffered a stroke three years ago that Speech and his wife stepped in and took over the stand.
Like his father, Speech dedicates the family business to supporting the Milwaukee community. Robert began hiring inner city youth to work the stand and Speech continues that tradition today. Check out my video for more on Speech and Robby’s Corn Roast.
