The late spring rains came without warning and swept expensive nitrogen away from the farmer's soil. Many crops drowned, but because of inadequate nutrients the remaining yields remain “sour.” Farm experts anticipate tens of millions of dollars in damage, and many farmers will suffer through that damage because they could not afford costly insurance coverage.
