Innovative Solutions to Poverty are badly needed in a world where half of all humanity lives on less than $2 a day. Even with the growth of new approaches, like microfinance, 2.5 billion people lack access to critical financial services that can help them feed and educate their children, stabilize their communities, and work their way out of poverty. The challenge is clear. As Nelson Mandela said, "Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life." We will tell you about the innovative efforts of the Village Banking Campaign, and we hope to hear about your efforts as well.

We'd be interested in your thoughts on a new project by FINCA International and Ambassador of Hope Natalie Portman.  See below for Natalie's blog posting from MySpace (www.myspace.com/villagebanking):

"Dear Friends,

I am really excited to tell you about an amazing opportunity that I have been given to promote the Village Banking Campaign's goal of operating 100,000 Village Banks serving 1 million of the world's poorest by 2010. About six months ago, I was asked by Apple iTunes to produce their first-ever charity album with the specific goal of raising funds to support FINCA's Village Banking Campaign. I was thrilled to combine my two passions - great music and microfinance - to create something that will make it possible not only for FINCA's programs to receive additional loan capital, but for thousands of people around the world who purchase the album to learn how FINCA provides a hand up, not a handout.

The result is an album that I love called Big Changes: Songs for FINCA.  I encourage you to go online and listen to the amazing and talented people including Beirut, Tokyo Police Club, Sean Hayes, Brett Dennen, Norah Jones, the Shins and other musician friends who have contributed previously un-released tracks to make this album possible.

Warm regards,

Natalie Portman
Ambassador of Hope, FINCA International"
