Six months ago, Jay-Z kicked off his international tour with a purpose. Having announced his partnership with the United Nations and MTV, the MC set out to raise awareness about the world's water crisis which affects more than 1 billion people around the globe. With MTV cameras in tow, Jay Z traveled to several areas around the world where the lack of access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation is devastating lives and communities.
The doc highlights sustainable, environmentally-conscious solutions to the water crisis like PlayPumps, merry-go-round-like structures that pump clean drinking water from a deep borehole every time children spin it. There are already more than 700 PlayPump systems installed in southern Africa, and through partnerships with non-profit organizations like The Case Foundation and the MCJ Foundation, the goal is to provide clean drinking water to 10 million people in 10 countries by 2010 through these innovative solutions.
So what can you do this water day? Learn why so many people are suffering because they lack access to clean water, and become a part of the solution here. Then get your friends, school and community to join PlayPumps International's 100 Pumps in 100 Days challenge, which hopes to raise funds to provide clean drinking water to 100 communities in sub-Saharan Africa from March 22 through June 29.
And as always, you can take action by deciding to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Now that you know billions of people don't have the luxury of turning on the tap and letting the water run, you may think twice before wasting this precious resource.
